All I ever needed to learn, I learned in Kindergarten

Today is Brooklyn's last day of Kindergarten. There were times at the beginning of the year I never thought we'd make it this far. Days when, with a monumental amount of tears streaming down her round little cheeks, she would beg "mommy didn't you go to school? You are smart, can't you just teach me everything I need to know?" Days when she would try the oldest trick in the book, "mommy you are soooo pretty. Today you could teach me how to put on makeup like you and we could dress up in all your really pretty clothes". And many, many, many nights when she would cry herself to sleep pleading for us not to make her go back the next morning. Those times were full of my own tears, my own dashed hopes for her to be the child who so loves school that she is head of class, teacher's pet, the apple of the entire school staffs eye (no pressure there, huh?). Finally, more than half way through the year, she began to realize this is her life at this time. Tears were becoming more rare, the begging began to fade, and she began to put more of herself into each day. The summer countdown started almost a month ago, and she could hardly contain herself this morning as the dream for a break became reality. I am, again, tearful and swelling with pride that my sweet, tender little girl has accomplished this milestone. Did she always do the right thing, no. Did she rise to the head of her class, no. Did she become the teacher's pet, I'm not sure. But, she worked her hardest. She picked herself back up when she fell flat on her face, and tried to follow what she knew was right. She tried to influence her little classmates to do right as well, "don't talk when the teacher is talking-you're not the grown-up, you need to share, oooohh...we shouldn't say stupid-it's mean". That often brought some persecution on her five year old shoulders. The other kids didn't like hearing what they "shouldn't" do. But, even when they would get mad at her, she would stick her little chin out and say "it's the truth, my mommy told me so". Well done my sweet child. As I look back on her first year of school, I find myself thinking of my heavenly father. He does this on a daily, weekly, monthly, lifetime basis. He walks me to the door of opportunity and allows me to go through it, even though I may be kicking and screaming; begging with tears wetting my cheeks, unable to see the importance and purpose of this. He knows what is best for me, despite my pleading to the contrary. He patiently waits while I rebel, while I stumble, while I constantly argue my shortsided case. His heart aches when I stubbornly fall into the same trap time and time again, and leaps when I finally surrender. When I finally get out of His way. When, no matter what persecution others throw at me, I stand; sticking my little chin out, proclaiming "it's the truth. My Father told me so". And when my eternal "summer" begins, I long to hear "well done my sweet child". What a wonderful milestone kindergarten has been....for me.
